INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) publish guides and standards (e.g. ISO/IEC Guide 62 or ISO/IEC 17025) that specify requirements and procedures for Conformity Assessment Bodies undertaking product certification, management system certification/registration, personnel certification, testing, calibration or inspection. ISO and IEC also publish guides and standards that specify the requirements and procedures that govern the Accreditation Bodies that assess or evaluate whether Conformity Assessment Bodies comply with relevant guides and standards. .

Standards and guides for conformity assessment are developed by the ISO Council's Committee for Conformity Assessment (ISO/CASCO), one of the ISO's policy development committees. In future, Guides specifying requirements that must be met will be published as standards. An example is ISO/IEC Guides 58 and 61 which have recently been revised and merged and will now be published as a standard, ISO/IEC 17011. Groupings of Accreditation Bodies, such as IAF, ILAC and IATCA, play a major role in the development of conformity assessment standards.
