HOW TO BE A QMS OR EMS AUDITOR

Under the Quality Management System Certification/Registration Scheme for ISO 9001: 2000 or the Environmental Management System Certification/Registration Scheme for ISO 14001, the person who conducts the assessment and decides whether a company meets the requirements of the relevant standard, must be registered as an auditor for that standard. Before an auditor can be allowed to sign audit certificates on behalf of a Registration/Certification Body, he/she needs to be evaluated and registered as competent to undertake such an audit.
As of today, the Regitors Bodies that conduct evaluation and registration of auditors in Japan are:

Registration Body for auditors of Quality Management Systems against the ISO 9000 series of standards:
Japanese Registration of Certificated Auditors.

Registration Body for of auditors for Environmental Management Systems against ISO 14001:
Center of Environmental Auditors’ Registration in Japan/ Environmental Management Association for Industry.

For more information (confirmation of the requirements for qualification, request for application documents, etc.), please contact these bodies direct.
There are three levels of auditor: Provisional Auditor, Auditor and Lead Auditor. Normally, a Provisional Auditor is at the first stage of registration. One of the requirements for registration as a Provisional Auditor is to have successfully completed an Auditor Training course. The course must be conducted by an Auditor Training Body that is accredited by JAB as competent to provide training for QMS and EMS auditors.
For specific information about a training course, including its programs, fees, schedule, etc., please contact one of the Auditor Training Bodies accredited by JAB.
Considerable progress has also been achieved towards International Multilateral Recognition of schemes for the training and evaluation/ registration of auditors. In the case of QMS (ISO 9000) auditors, one accredited Auditor Training and Registration Body, Japanese Registration of Certificated Auditors (JRCA), is a member of the International Auditor and Training Certification Association (IATCA) and has already achieved membership of IATCA’s Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA). This enables auditors who are registered by JRCA to be registered with IATCA as an international QMS auditor. For more information, please contact us.
