Accreditation of bodies operating product certification systems is a scheme to assess product certification bodies against predetermined criteria and accredit them as competent to evaluate the conformity of specific products against relevant product standards. The international standard ISO/IEC Guide 65: 1996 - General requirements for bodies operating product certification systems is used as the accreditation standard. JAB conducts assessments and grants accreditation to product certification bodies as competent to certify products within the scope specified on the application for accreditation. When product certification bodies apply for accreditation they must state the certification system name, the type of certification system as listed in JAB P204, the description of the products to be certified, the standards/ regulations, etc. applicable for the certification and the scope of the certification activities they intend to undertake, selected from among the accreditation scope-sectors listed in JAB P205. JAB then conducts an assessment of the competence of the staff of the applicant product certification body and the effectiveness of its management system, using the criteria set out in ISO/IEC Guide 65, and decides whether to grant accreditation (see the illustration below).
